11:31 pm - The Committee to Determine the Validity of This Post
I'm sort of surprised by how much I love The Office. I did not intend for it to fill me with joy at its very existence.

My stomach hurts from laughing, you guys. All episodes should be an hour long. This wasn't just two episodes stuck together; this was an hour-long episode, and it felt like one.

And, er, just go read vonnie_k's post because it's bound to be better than mine. I was going to make a real post, but then she said everything nicely. Instead, I will just DVR through and note things that made me laugh really really hard.

Or I will comment on things! Like Pam's Christmas gift! Oh my God! I love her so much. And Jim! JIM. NO. I WANT TO SORT OF PUNCH YOU. EXCEPT I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO. BECAUSE MOVING ON IS SOMETIMES GOOD IN LIFE. BUT GAH.

As we forward through a weird commercial with David Carradine, I'll note that I was surprised that Michael and Carol were still together, after the public proposal thing. But, hey, this way we got to see him dump him. And it is sad. Poor Michael.

Angela was fucking awesome this episode, basically. I don't usually like her. But she was even kinda hot sometimes.

You guys, I TOTALLY APPROVE of Pam and Karen being friends. Because it means TWICE THE PRETTY in the SAME FRAME. And then Jim makes the most confused and worried and uncomfortable face!

BELLY LAUGH ALERT:

"Then why are there two fliers?"
"I understand that this is confusing for everyone, let me explain. There's a party that starts at 3—"
"Right."
"—and there's a way more fun party that starts at 2:45."
"Right, and if you're interested in the way more fun party, all the info can be found here on our more brightly colored flier."

BELLY LAUGH ALERT:

"As ranking number two, I am starting a committee to determine the validity of the two committees, and I am the sole member. The committee will act on this now."
"Okay, this is stupid."
"Can you please keep it down? I'm in session. [sessions] I've determined this committee is valid."
"What? No! Wait wait wait: permission to join the Validity Committee."
[sessions]
"Permission denied."
"Dammit!"

So. Hilarious. It was like something out of Catch-22.

Ryan's excuses scene was good too, and then, in no time at all:

BELLY LAUGH ALERT:

"Bros before hos! Why? Because your bros are always there for ya. They have got your back after your ho rips your heart out for no good reason. And you were nothing but great to your ho, and you told her that she was the only ho for you, and that she was better than all the other hos in the world. And then...then suddenly she's not your ho, no mo'."

Could. Not. Stop. Laughing. Michael is so oblivious to what he's saying. All the time. It's hilarious.

And speaking of oblivious: OH, KAREN. HE'S CUTE. THEY WERE ENGAGED. YOU'VE GOT A LOT TO LEARN ABOUT THIS TOWN, SWEETIE.

I love Kevin and his "Double fudge brownies vs. Angela" monologue.

PAM GOT GOOSEBUMPS.

And then Jim can't move on! He can't change who he is! He's a prankster! How can he resist fucking with Dwight?

Oh, Phyllis so doesn't want to be at Angela's...meeting.

Dwight and Angela are so made for each other. It's pretty crazy like that.

And Pam! I love Pam so much! She's got a gooey marshmallow center, and she's always there to make her enemies feel better.

BELLY LAUGH ALERT:

HE MARKED HER. WITH A MARKER.

And Pam gave Toby a bathrobe! How can she be so nice? Will she marry me, you think?

The scene with Michael and Jim seemed, to me, almost like a deliberate mirror to "Booze Cruise," but they didn't make a literal callback, so I don't know. But OH NO JIM REBOUND?! Man, Jim, Karen doesn't deserve to be just a Rebound Girl. I do think this is something he comes to realize during the course of this episode, though; I don't think he's meant to treat Karen like a rebound or even viewed her as a rebound. He viewed her as Karen, but he knows he still wants Pam, but he also totally saw Pam reconnecting with Roy and OH NOES THIS IS ALL SO BAD BUT PERFECTLY REALISTIC AND NOT CONTRIVED AND ACK.

Also, Michael totally called Jan. Who the fuck else would he take to Jamaica? After having a rebound conversation? You don't take Todd Packer to Jamaica. I don't even understand how you could think that. Michael and Jan! Oh, man, that is one original element to the U.S. version they have gotten so much great mileage out of.

And during the credits, Jim embraces his destiny as Tormentor of Dwight! Oh man.

How is this show so good? It is craziness.

Seriously.

I love that Pam not only admitted she was bitchy to Karen, but that when they teamed up they really worked as a team and were awesome together. No Insane Troll Logic of Cattiness!

Any other show, and they would've been at each other's throats.

Also, "suddenly she's not your ho, no mo'" is so going to be the next one-liner to take off. At least out of my mouth, that is.

JIM. NO. I WANT TO SORT OF PUNCH YOU.
I was grinning all through the "CIA contacted Dwight" part, and seriously felt the happiness melt off my face with the rejection. And then I was worried that it was going to be "Christmas Party" ONLY TWICE AS LONG AND DEPRESSING.
And then Jim makes the most confused and worried and uncomfortable face!
Amazing. His complete, stark panic was absolutely priceless.
I do think this is something he comes to realize during the course of this episode, though; I don't think he's meant to treat Karen like a rebound or even viewed her as a rebound.
I still think he's kind of a jerk for not telling her about Pam, and if he doesn't do so soon, it's seriously going to blow up. But I want Karen AND Andy to stay!
Who the fuck else would he take to Jamaica?
THANK YOU. The explanation seemed to be "well, they left it open because they want us to THINK it's Jan, so of course it will turn out not to be" which would be find if this were Friends, but these writers don't pull that shit. I just...sigh.

I think they left it "open" because they KNOW WE ARE NOT COMPLETE MORONS AND CAN DEDUCE THAT IT'S JAN.

I can understand Jim's not telling Karen about Pam, but, yeah, if she doesn't find out soon, it's going to get ugly and awkward when she does. Regardless.

Oh, melty happiness. Oh, show.

It is almost-almost-ALMOST as good as Arrested Development. And I would have sold my soul to keep THAT shit on the air.

What is Jim going to tell Karen about Pam, really? It is not as though they dated, per se, so he would have to say "Well, I was in love with her, and she blew me off because she was engaged but lo and behold she isn't engaged anymore but I'm REALLY into you, trust me, and by the way, thanks for moving to Scranton?"

Kelly singing "We Belong" was the most adorable thing ever.

I *hope* Michael was calling Jan, but is she really that desperate/unprofessional to say yes so quickly to a vacation like that? Then again, his tone was not one to be used with his mom or a male friend. Unless they are throwing in a completely different person out of left field...

Angela did look really pretty at times. Laura-Ingalls-white-shirt and all.

"As ranking number two, I am starting a committee to determine the validity of the two committees, and I am the sole member. The committee will act on this now."
"Okay, this is stupid."

I got home at midnight last night. I should have gone to bed. Did I? NO. I stayed up to watch The Office!

Oh man, benihanas. "Ryan, we're going to Asian Hooters, come on!" Dwight getting hit with his shrimp. THE ONION VOLCANO AND HOW MUCH ANDY LOVES IT. Because it is so like that, and everyone's always at the table going "oooooooooooh" and I'm like, PEOPLE HE POURED WATER ON A HOT GRILL. IT SMOKES. GET OVER IT. Yay for all the Benihana scenes.

OMG MICHAEL CALLED JAN (it just has to be jan!) AND SHE SAID YES! AND HE WAS SO SHOCKED. I think I've said this to you before, but I think the one place where the Office US really shines over the Office UK (which I also adore, and I mostly don't compare them anymore, because I think they're two separate beasts at this point) is how much I just want to hug Michael. I want to ~*~SAVE HIM FROM HIMSELF~*~, you know? I love David Brent, because he's just such a smarmy asshole, but I feel deep, deep pity for Michael. I want to hug him and tell him that it doesn't have to be this way!

just a step down from Michael on the Pity List is Dwight. Man, he was awesome this episode. I really like episodes where they manage to make Dwight both an obnoxious twerp and also a deeply sympathetic character. It HURTS ME INSIDE that he's being edged out of his position as Michael's favored by Andy. INSIDE, Sunil!

ANGELA FOR THE WIN! I'm so glad that Pam finally figured out how much they were hurting Angela. I'm also glad that they made Karen not draw it out futher maliciously. I love how, at the end, they all looked genuinely enthralled with her Little Drummer Boy song. And her announcements were awesome! "Stay tuned for, uh, further announcements."

OH ROY. WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME SORT OF LOVE YOU? A scrapbook for Pam? Asking if he could use the comics to wrap presents? I like how they're showing how much Ray (and, by extention, us) is realizing everything Pam did, everything he took for granted. And he's not, like, doing these things to woo her back; I think he is genuinely trying to change himself because he realizes how fundamentally wrong he's been the past 10 years. OH ROY.

Okay, saving the most heartbreaking for last: OH MY GOD JIM AND PAM. When he turned down her (awesome, awesome, awesome) gift, I think I actually heard her heart breaking. OR MAYBE IT WAS MY HEART. IDK. It's just. . three months. Three months of planning for that gift! And I was so hoping he'd just give her the Christmas card from last year, and I actually cried a little. And then Jim and Michael's talk which, you're right, is a perfect mirror to booze cruise. I expected Jim to turn to Michael and tell him, "never, ever, ever give up." But instead he LOOKED AT PAM'S DESK AND TALKED ABOUT HOW YOU NEVER MOVE ON FROM THE ONE YOU REALLY LOVE AND GAH!

In conclusion, I think *my* gift from the Office was the part where STANLEY was the huge deciding factor in the party war. ILU STANLEY!

I was thinking about that last night too! Because I remember my early days when I was all, "Nyah I don't think I'll ever love Michael blah blah blah," BUT NOW!

I really like episodes where they manage to make Dwight both an obnoxious twerp and also a deeply sympathetic character. It HURTS ME INSIDE that he's being edged out of his position as Michael's favored by Andy. INSIDE, Sunil!
It's like we never appreciated Dwight until Andy showed us THERE WAS A LOWER PLACE!

And her announcements were awesome! "Stay tuned for, uh, further announcements."
"Is that a threat?"
"No, it's, uh, an invitation."

OH ROY. WHY MUST YOU MAKE ME SORT OF LOVE YOU?
He's like a downtrodden puppy dog! He doesn't suck anymore! Poor guy.

And he's not, like, doing these things to woo her back; I think he is genuinely trying to change himself because he realizes how fundamentally wrong he's been the past 10 years. OH ROY.
I agree!

I KNOW! How could Jim do that?

And then Jim and Michael's talk which, you're right, is a perfect mirror to booze cruise. I expected Jim to turn to Michael and tell him, "never, ever, ever give up."
Exaaaaaaaaaactly what I thought was going to happen!

In conclusion, I think *my* gift from the Office was the part where STANLEY was the huge deciding factor in the party war. ILU STANLEY!

The Office really was good last night. I think that I have to watch S2 one of these days though, because I continue to be bewildered about how anyone could ever date Michael. Or how he's still the boss. I kind of liked him last night, but mostly he irritates the hell out of me.

Jim's panic face was awesome. I love it when guys do that. Because I love Jim, I'd like to think that he only figured out just now that of course he's still in love with Pam and will never be over tormenting Dwight. But say hello to the imminent awkward.

You do need to watch S2, and that will make more sense. The answer to the first question was actually discussed in the VM4 last night, if you noticed: he's really sweet in his non-insane moments. The answer to the second question is that, well, sometimes he gets the job done. Sometimes.

I have the DVDs, but there are three thousand special features I need to watch before you can borrow them.

Joe and I are watching the 1st season of the british version, he for the first time, and he loves it exactly as much as I thought he would, so we're soon going to have to watch the american version, and I have every intention of being obsessed. Actually, it'll probably be a good distraction from waiting for hte next season of Big Love to start IN JUNE. Which, evil, and also, if you're not watching Big Love YOU HAVE TO.

But my point is you're getting me really excited to catch up on the american Office. : ) (Why can't I be succinct about anything?)

Really? I don't know. I know, VM alumni, but I'm more interested in Dexter. And maybe Weeds. Oh, shit, and Deadwood. There are a bunch of shows I need to watch. The list never ends.
