11:52 pm - Meme: Above and Beyond
So I was trying to write a post about my issue with the glorification of gay culture as if it makes one hip and subversive, but I couldn't figure out how to do it without coming off as homophobic and/or hypocritical, so have some memes instead. Feel free to participate in as many as you want.

Please leave a one-word comment that you think best describes me — it can only be one word long. Then copy and paste this in your journal so that I may leave a word about you.

(1) Write a blog entry as me and post it as a comment. It can be about anything I would normally write about. Do your best to emulate my style/voice/pompous know-it-all-ness, like you know whatever. Be as sarcastic or as sincere as you like.

(2) You can only post this meme in your own blog if you do step (1).

You know that one where you tell me why you friended me? And maybe what you thought of me initially and how your impression of me has changed or been confirmed since then? Do that.

Here, have a song: MC Lars - Ahab. It is a rap about Moby Dick. For serious. It includes the words "monomaniac," "dubloon," and "hubris."

Oh, fuck it, I might as well make a poll, right? I haven't posted in a while and kind of miss my inbox flood. Because I am a commentwhore.

Aha! And while I am here, I might as well thank the wonderful people who donated to MI.net in order to keep it ad-free. Because even if you think our site is an eyesore upon the Internet, it would be even more of an eyesore if it were cluttered with ads!

But I think our site is pretty. *hugs site*

In conclusion, Foucault's Pendulum is, according to the layperson in an elevator, "a big book."

I should comment, but all I can think of now is how much I miss "American Gothic"! I even loved Shaun Cassidy when he was a Hardy Boy. Who knew he could write?

The first three shows on that list all premiered in 1995, and they were ALL CANCELLED.

Fan-tastic.

Did you see that obscure thing in the latest episode of Veronica Mars? That was Rob doing a shoutout to someone I know. Because I am just that cool. And how about those Tegan and Sara girls, how brilliant are they? I must give a huge boo to whoever decided to put out the American Gothic DVD in the order they aired on CBS, lousy know-nothing bastards - I will give them such a seeing to on TWoP.

Anyway, I must go, because there is TV that needs to be watched.

I friended you because you are freaking Sunil Patil, thats why. And my first impressions of you were the same as with all Cloudmakers "Bloody hell, he/she/it seems smart", and they were confirmed with a side order of "Holy crap - that dude's TV knowledge eclipses even my own. That dastardly fop."

And it's really not t that big - if you wanted to blow some minds, you should bust out a copy of the collected Baroque Cycle (I doubt it exists, but it should).

Do you lurk in the VM4? I totally mentioned that yesterday.

Did I actually seem smart on Cloudmakers? I hardly ever figured out any puzzles.

I watched pretty much everything. Well except for Space, Roundhouse and Are You Afraid of the Dark (that creeped me out).

American Gothic is one of my "seething bitterness" shows (i.e. a show whose cancellations caused you to well, you get the idea).

I like that story about how I used to think you were a girl.

And then I thought you were a pervert.

And then I wanted to have your babies.

Because you decided not to talk about gay culture - which is sad, as I could have thrown in some Daltonisms - I'm using my gay icon. so, there.

It's sad that I only recognized the names of about five of those shows, and only have seen episodes of one (the obvious one, and probably only because it's been on the longest). But I'm not going to say "I feel old," because 1) it's such a cliche and 2) I don't.

Hmmm....ok. This is going to be tough. I don't know how to make those little lines, but I'll come up with some way to separate them

Meme 1: famewhore! (ok, kidding), erm....compassionate.

************************************

Meme 2:
So, I was sitting on the train today reading [insert long book title here] when I looked across the aisle and noticed that [insert easily identifiable demographic subject here] was reading [insert second long book title here]. I found the [second long book title] to not quite live up to the hype, but I found myself wondering what [he/she] thought of it.

Oh! I got my [obscure and cancelled tv series] dvds today! Big *hugs* to [random lj user] who pimped it to me. She [who are we kidding? it's ALWAYS a she] knows good tv. Plus she makes out with me. You guys should check it out, if you can find it.

The writers are going back to work on Veronica soon! I made Rob a mixed cd of songs he should include in the show. I'm not sure if [insert alterna/indie band name here] would really fit, but I think [insert second alterna/indie band name here] definitely would and since he loves [insert third alterna/indie band name here] I'm pretty sure he would also like [insert fourth alterna/indie band name here]. We will see soon.

If you guys haven't seen it yet, be sure to check out [insert new Veronica/Buffy/BSG fan site here]. It rocks.

In parting, I love [insert tv girlfriend here].

******************************
(p.s. I suck at writing as you, mostly because I haven't been reading your LJ that long. I did what I could)

I friended you because you always had very long, very thought out posts about the show or fan events and I got tired of trying to remember how to spell your name to look it up and figured I'd just friend you so I'd get the scoop immediately. I knew you'd be less hate-y on the show without being over the top love-y about it so I could read and get a good set of commentary of things that happened without flying into a blinding rage.
I waited a long time to friend you so when I did, I thought you were pretty much exactly how you are. When I first started on TWoP I thought you were a girl. Not because of your posts, but just because you were cool. Otherwise, you are just as funny and kind as I thought.

Whew! That was tough. *pats self on back*

You did awesomely. I cracked up. A lot. Many times.

Everyone thinks I'm a girl.

Because I am paranoid, I think that your abortive gay culture rant was sparked by my Pete/Carl picspams, and now I'm afraid I have angered you in some way.

Eh, Foucault's Pendulum. I've read bigger.

This is not possible. Pete and Carl are for lovers!!!

Also, our glorifying it doesn't make us hip. It just makes us drool.

(watch, now he's going to say that it WAS Pete and Carl, to which I say, Sunil, EMBRACE THE GAY. LOVE IT. LOVE IT LIKE IT LOVES YOU.)

Gay culture makes one hip or subversive because the vocal minority thinks that fags are evil. And because fags can't get married. We're the hot counter-culture button of the moment and someday, something else will fly right in and steal our thunder and I'll be fine with that. Gay culture is a world in and of itself (pretty and ugly at the same time.)

I think it's kissing members of the same sex but lying to our co-workers and parents about that which make us seem subversive, but honey, I'll be real. We'd be kissing the same people even if our co-workers were allies and our parents were lifelong members of PFLAG. It's not a preference, it's an orientation.

Hope that clears things up.

But don't you think making gayness hip and cool and wanting to gay everyone up devalues the culture? Have you heard Jon Stewart's comment on the gay marriage debate being about whether you think gay people are part of the human condition or just a random fetish? To me, squeeing over the notion that two people/characters might possibly be the slightest bit gay treats them like a random fetish.
