11:49 pm - True Fans Don't Want to Do Things Like That
So it does seem that the post (in its multiple locations) I linked to the other day did in fact set off somewhat of a miniwank, and, having endorsed it, I wanted to respond to the wild accusations about its implications as to what a "True Fan" should be like, but I couldn't exactly find the words, so zimshan found them for me.

That wasn't enough, though, because you haven't been dewanked until hobviously has punched you in the face. Well said, buttons. Well said.

Because of these two lovely people, you were spared a post not only about the situation at hand, but also about how I define myself by my fandom, which is a dangerous thing when a show is so close to cancellation, because what if part of my identity gets cancelled?! And about how I escape into the online world where I am supercool and popular in order to ignore the sad state of my real life. And about the existential quandaries of "What is the point of living?" and "No one will care about me or remember who I am or what I did in a hundred years anyway!" and "If nothing we do matters, WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT, ANGEL? WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT?!"

Yes, my friends, you have successfully avoided that particular angstfest. Instead, you have earned yourselves the opportunity to dance around to my most-played song this week, "I Am a Scientist," by the Dandy Warhols.

I love you guys. Thanks for being around.

'kay!!

I really need a good Beaver icon. Also, where is your icon from? It's the cutest, and I don't remember when Veronica ever made that face.

You troublemaker, you. Heh.

I've largely stayed out of the issue because I didn't think any good would've come of me throwing my two cents in. I pretty much agree with everything everyone's said, even the things that contradict, but all these STRONG and ANGRY opinions make me wary. Even when the sentiments are logical and articulate, I naturally have an adverse reaction to someone telling me how to think, or making me feel guilty for expressing any of my opinions that aren't uber-positive and brimming with praise. (I know that's not what you did.) But that's my contrarian nature rearing its ugly head (hence my sn "contrarianfreak"). It's not cool when some fans think their words are worth more than other fans' words.

Sigh, fandom is such a bitch. I feel a great schism on the horizon for us VM fans. It can't be pretty. Which is why I'm backing away, slowly and carefully. Don't want to lose any appendages in the fray.

Oh, no. I'm the same way, and you just scared the crap out of me.

Note to self: Get a life.

It was a sad day when I realized that teen angst doesn't go away--it just turns into bigger, more existential angst. Part of me is glad, though, because I like still getting to say the word "angst." If you make Merriam-Webster online pronounce it, it will pronounce it like "aaaahngst." It's pretty neat. So we're okay. *hug*

You're sweet. It's nice to read your uber-positive view of your fandom.

As for the fandom stuff, meh. I've already posted enough on that, I think.

Not "meh" on your existential crisis, though. I feel you and I feel for you on that.

For a little while there I thought you said something you said in the comments of that post in one of its locations set off a wank, so I went looking for it. I see now I was wrong.

Really truly? I kind of hate that someone can't just say "I know you don't like it, but before you complain, think about why they're doing it" without everyone getting all fired up. I suppose if you've been criticizing or critiquing the show publicly, it might not come across who she means, but I've actually seen people say things like, "I don't like Veronica's hair," with the threat of them not watching implied if she doesn't switch back to a hairstyle they like. I just assumed inigo was talking about this sort of thing more than intelligent critique.

Also it's kind of sad that by Season 2, Logan is in a fandomplace where it took Spike three years of watching and six years of show to get for me (ie, the place where his ladyfriends chat him up so much that I sometimes wish they'd kill him off, just to displease those fans - sorry Logan!).

I really hope no one reads that and kills me for it.

Oh, don't be scared. It's not literally close to cancellation. Just, you know, still not getting the ratings that would ensure its survival.

I love you. I missed all your wank. OK, not all your wank -- I observed from afar but couldn't participate. Nonetheless: hee.

Seanan sang pretty, however. Missed the wank and she sang pretty. I think this means I win. You were missed, too.
