09:58 am - Gonna Psych You Out in the Beginning
Calling all Psych fans! I have begun watching Psych regularly and am now pulling a Star Trek by setting my DVR to pick up reruns so I can watch old episodes.

But I have $5 in Amazon On Demand credit, which means I can watch five specific episodes of my choosing! One will be the pilot, but I call upon you, loyal viewers, for suggestions on the other four episodes.

I have seen most of season three, a few episodes from season two, and nothing from season one. What FOUR episodes do you recommend I watch, either because they are the best or because they are important in continuity (characterwise, plotwise, Shawn/Jules-wise, that's the way it crumbles cookie-wise, etc)?

I do want comments and explanations, but I know everyone loves a good poll, so behind the cut you will find one! I have left out episodes I've seen or already plan to see, and I've included a couple episodes that I have faint memories of maybe seeing parts of, but I don't think I've seen the whole episode. So get clicking, and remember: you can only choose FOUR. (For now. Feel free to recommend other episodes that I can look forward to in the comments.)

Okay, you HAVE to watch Shawn vs. the Red Phantom, as it is set at a comic book convention!

And it stars George Takei!! I just noticed that and realized it was a strong contender.

I really think you should watch all of them, but the ones I chose show a little bit more history between Shawn and Gus, has some relationship info or gives more background into each of their families.

Oh, I do plan to watch all of them eventually, but it's not a show I feel like I have to mainline right away. I'll take my time. But your reasoning for choosing episodes is exactly what I was looking for, so thanks! If I find the DVDs for cheap, I can snag them one day and hit some more key episodes.

I love them all, so it's really hard to choose. That said, I went for the two that Moss and I quote the most often. Scary Sherry is hilarious and also really scary. You may be less of a wimp than me, but if you get scared easily, you might not want to watch it just before bedtime. Spellinggg Bee is just a brilliant classic. Oh so quotable! Also not terribly scary. I think you'd probably like the Red Phantom, because dude, comics, but I didn't vote for it because I haven't watched it since it was new, and I don't really remember it. So, um, I've convinced myself to re-watch if that helps you at all. No? Oh. Right.

I'm really bad with ep titles, so I have no idea. But it's a great show! Ooh, I do think Spelling Bee was a good one, especially for Gus. Definitely check out that one!

Spellingg Bee and Scary Sherry: Bianca's Toast are both Psych classics. Shawn vs. the Red Phantom is also great for all the reasons already mentioned upstream but also because... the introduction of MAGIC HEAD! Watch it and you'll understand what they were talking about at Comic Con.

I'm a little sad that I don't remember nearly as many S2 episodes off the top of my head. I need to re-watch that season. That said, the cast and crew all love American Duos. It is always cited as one of the episodes they enjoyed filming and it is pretty freaking great. 65 Million Years Off is one of my absolute faves and the events of that episode have come up in other episodes.

You get to meet Gus' Uncle Burton in Meat is Murder, But Murder is Also Murder and I kinda love Uncle Burton. I also voted for Black and Tan because it's one of my faves and one where Gus gets to shine. OH! And Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead is another of my faves but you do have to watch 65 Million Years Off first because it has a great callback to that episode.

And, finally, Christmas Joy! I just re-watched this one last week. I love their Christmas episodes a lot (and am bummed they won't have one this year) plus this one has a bunch of stuff relating to Gus' family. You should definitely watch Gus' Dad May Have Killed an Old Guy before watching it, though, so you'll get some of the references in it.

Clearly!! They are very popular. And the latter is directed by John Landis! Nice.

I don't know what you're talking about because I MISSED THE PANEL.

That said, the cast and crew all love American Duos. It is always cited as one of the episodes they enjoyed filming and it is pretty freaking great.
Oh, cool. I imagine the premieres and finales are pretty important.

65 Million Years Off is one of my absolute faves and the events of that episode have come up in other episodes.
Ooh. The concept sure sounds amusing. It is a contender for the Fourth.

OH! And Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead is another of my faves but you do have to watch 65 Million Years Off first because it has a great callback to that episode.
Oh! Thanks for the tip.

Aha! Thanks again for the tip. I'll see what comes up on my DVR. If one of the later ones comes up, I may download the earlier one first. I think I've seen a bit of "Gus' Dad..." before, and it is another contender for the Fourth. I am more drawn to "65 Million Years Off," though, because there may be dinosaurs involved. Are there dinosaurs involved?

Oh, I love it! I always enjoy it when I watch it, and I've seen almost a season's worth of episodes. I definitely recommend it. It's fun and whimsical, but the mysteries are still cleverly constructed.

Psych is a fun show, but I have a hard time recalling which individual episodes are which.

"American Duos" has Tim Curry in it, and "65 Million Years Off" has a dinosaur.

Sorry, can't be much more help than that.

Ooh, Tim Curry.

But I think the dinosaur's taking it.

If I had to pick a top five I think they would be: Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead, American Duos, Scary Sherry, Spellingg Bee, and 65 Million Years off.

Oh, I forgot Lights, Camera... Homicido! That one is DEFINITELY top five; I just can't figure out what to take out to make room for it. THIS IS TOO HARD.

I love Tim Curry too, but "65 Million Years Off" has DINOSAURS.

DINOSAURS.

OMG PSYCH OMG.

I am a huge, huge fan of the Shawn/Gus dynamic so I think my pics would reflect that. Spellingg Bee, Shawn vs. the Red Phantom, 65 Million Years Off and Gus' Dad May Have Killed an Old Guy are a couple of my absolute favorite but if you want to add an episode with Jules being badass (with a side of Shawn/Jules), I would suggest Talk Derby To Me, which has Jules going undercover into a roller derby team to investigate a couple robberies.

Most of my favorites have already been mentioned and seem to be strong contenders, but I have to put in a plug for "From the Earth to the Starbucks." Not so much character-wise, but it has some of my very favorite lines/moments from the entire series (well, through the first 5 eps or so of Season 3--I'm behind). Dule Hill's wife is also in that episode.

Season One is the only one I own/have seen multiple times so I'm far more familiar with it. Thus, all my recs were for S1 eps.

But I completely agree with the apparent consensus of:

Pilot - See how the madness got started! Learn about Shawn's dental plan!

Spellingg Bee - This is the very first episode I ever saw, so it holds a special place. And everyone is 100% correct on the quotability! My sister and I reference lines from this pretty much EVERY time someone returns from the grocery store having bought ... well, you'll see.

Shawn vs. The Red Phantom - It's the Not!Comicon episode! You have to watch!

Scary Sherry - In addition to everything mentioned above, I believe this is the first episode James Roday (actor who plays Shawn) got a writing credit on

And if you had to pick only one episode from S2, 65 Million Years Off, is side-splitingly funny! And, yes, there ARE dinosaurs, too!

I know you have already picked your five, but that is what I get for being away the week you poll D:

Not sure if Target is still having the deal, but S1 and S2 were $19.99 each a couple weeks back, which was when I picked up the DVDs myself.
