|11:59 pm - Answer the Phone. IT IS YOUR DESTINY!|
Because I am a loyal T-Mobile customer, I have been awarded 5 free ringtones. I have to download them by November 30, however, and I am terrible at making decisions! HELP MEEEEEE.
See, I am not a fan of ringtones that are just clips of songs! Because I don't want my phone to be singing to me! I like my ridiculously synthesized, wordless versions. But those appear to be on the outs, sadly. My current ringtone is a lovely little approximation of "Sour Times." I like my ringtones to be a little mellow, but that's generally because the synthesized versions of more upbeat and rockin' songs tend to sound really obnoxious. Like the one I had of "Bandages," which was kind of fun anyway.
Anyway! If I'm forced to have high-quality ringtones, at least I can find ones that don't have words. Plus, these are more expensive than the others, so I ought to get my free money's worth. I've narrowed it down to fifteen options. Some are nice and mellow, and others make me want to dance. Unless otherwise specified, assume the ringtone is a fifteen- to twenty-second sample of the opening or, in the case of the electronica, the most salient portion of the song. Also assume that the ringtone doesn't contain any words; listen to the music underneath.
What ringtones should I get? (Choose FIVE.)
Thanks for helping out! If you don't care about my ringtones, at least you can listen to some of my favorite songs, right?
Also, one of the music videos features a monkey playing a guitar. I won't say which one.

No Hey Ocean!? Bastards.
Heh. The unintentional interrobang is making me giggle.
Oh, and you might want to disregard my answers because I pretty much picked the ones who's titles I liked most. Except for "Supermassive Black Hole". I picked that one because I've heard you talk about how much you like it.

No Hey Ocean! But they have Persephone's Bees and Honeycut, two Oakland bands, which impressed me.

Well, it also has an awesome title. But I do love it and the ringtone is so fun!
I have had exactly three musical ringtones in the last seven years -- the Angel theme song and "When I'm Sixty-Four" on my old phone (both sounded great in beepy midi) and the Office theme song. I currently feel that the Office one is the best ringtone ever in terms of sounding like both a song and a ringtone. Plus it has made me friends when it went off in class by accident.
So, you know, be like me. Win friends and influence people!
I considered the Office ringtone, but my cubicle is already decked out with tons of Office merchandise; I don't want to feel like it's the only show I watch!
Fine! Lose friends and alienate people! ;)
Seriously, I did vote. I based my choices less on whether I liked the song and more on "would I like this ringtone if it was near me or would I be annoyed?" I felt that "Disconnect the Dots" and "Future Proof" were definitely the two that would be most pleasing, especially based on the fact that for the most part you'll only hear the first ten or twenty seconds of the song, so if the good part doesn't start right away it's kind of boring.
Those are good things to consider! Thanks for your input.
I hate Finger Eleven. I really do. I remember seeing them ages ago, when they opened for Our Lady Peace. I was extremely unimpressed.
That said, when I discover people like them, I'm always a little shocked. Then, I wonder what is wrong with me that I don't like them. Then, I shrug. I also don't like a lot of other popular bands, ie. The Offspring, Oasis.
Oh, I downloaded the Hey Ocean stuff. I'm not sure what to think. I'm not completely sold yet.

I figure an ideal ringtone should a)get your attention, b)sound good, and c)not be obnoxious to others in the area. Luckily all of yours qualify for part c (and b, too, I think), so I focused on that first criterion--attention-getting.
We agree on what makes an ideal ringtone! This is unsurprising. Part a is a little tricky, as I think it disqualifies the Interpol, which I love, and partially affects the Massive Attack.
I am amused and unsurprised that "Paralyzer" and "Supermassive Black Hole" are kicking all the others' asses. They made my shortlist immediately. So much fun!

Actually, I came thisclose to voting for the Interpol. I had a tough time deciding between that and White Zombie. The Interpol was my runner up. It's not a big attention grabber, but I actually think it could make a really nice ringtone.
Thank you for putting as much thought into this as I am. *hug*

Oh, and I immediately checked "Paralyzer" when I looked at the list. I don't think the song's so great (though it's fun), but it really grabs my attention big-time every time I hear it on the radio. Potential drawback of that song: it's a total earworm. If I hear it on the radio it tends to be in my head for hours and hours.
Potential drawback of "Supermassive Black Hole": it may become the ringtone of choice for Twilight fans.

Oh, I love it hard and think it's awesome. It's superfun, and the bridge rules, short though it may be. I have had a post brewing in my head for ages about Songs I Love That Rock Really Hard Even Though They May Not Be Considered "Good" by Most People (And Also Some That Are).Potential drawback of that song: it's a total earworm.
Yeah, the problem with the song intros is I'll be expecting the rest of the song every time. Which is the advantage of the electronica ringtones, since the little clip basically is
the song.Potential drawback of "Supermassive Black Hole": it may become the ringtone of choice for Twilight fans.
I THOUGHT OF THAT.spectralbovine
: Oooh no, what if someone hears "Supermassive Black Hole" and thinks I like it because of Twilight
: i think you're probably safe from thatspectralbovine
: Oh good.

Songs I Love That Rock Really Hard Even Though They May Not Be Considered "Good" by Most People (And Also Some That Are).
This is really what I mean when I say that I don't think the song's so great. I really like it because it does rock hard and is so much fun, but...it feels like a song I've heard many times before. I think it's pretty unoriginal, and that prevents me from really labeling it as a great song (or prevents me from thinking that Finger Eleven is a group that I really need to look into deeper, though maybe I should).
But anyway, I like when I hear it on the radio and I always sing along loudly.
I only know one other Finger Eleven song, "One Thing," which sounds completely different. It's more downtempo and pensive. It's nice, though. And I always assume he's referencing it when he says "If one thing really means one." Also, I may in the future use that line as a tag for my constant use of "If there's one thing I like, it's [X]."
I really like the dark undertone of the music in the verses and then in the bridge, like I mentioned. And the little "Aaaaaah" background vocals that fade in sometimes. And it is, as you know, extremely catchy.

I am too lazy to click on all your musical links, so I abstain from the poll. HOWEVER, I would pick "Come Disconnect the Dots," because it seems likely that that is the happiest song you have there, and also it is psychedelically awesome. (But maybe I am unqualified here, because a) my love for happy music leads to a willingness to play ABBA on repeat, which I understand is Frowned Upon by people with taste, and b) I don't understand the whole ringtone phenomenon and just leave my phone on vibrate all the time.)

But it's Sunday! It is time to chill and watch music videos!

Hee. It is pretty fun and cute.
I don't understand the whole ringtone phenomenon and just leave my phone on vibrate all the time.
Aw. But they...make noise! Like a real phone! Sorta. Also, I feel like vibrate takes up battery power and one day my phone will just be unable to vibrate or something because it'll vibrate itself to death.

Perhaps for those who have ALREADY GRADUATED.
(eta: Um, LiveJournal, I clearly clicked "reply to comment." Hmph.)

I want to choose "Ramble On".

How did you get the ringtones? I've had T-Mobile for about seven years now!
I don't know! I didn't do anything. I just got something in the mail. Oh, it was my five-year anniversary.
I voted. That was fun.
I like to have a ringtone that starts out quiet before rocking out, because then if my phone ever rings at an inappropriate time, I have a few milliseconds to catch it before it gets louder.
This is my ringtone right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUfoX275lOs
Although, I think your number stills play Shake That Ass
I would also like to anti-vote on the Muse. *shrugs*
Oh, burn, I already downloaded that one.
You are so a closet Twilight fan. I see you commenting about cleolinda's Twilight stuff.
MY LOVE OF THE SONG HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TWILIGHT.
Well, I know that, Shifty.
You have a Sour Times ringtone? Made of win! I just have a plain one the phone came with; I don't really care to spend extra for a ringtone of a song I already have. But if I were to pick one, I'd probably use something like Lily Allen's "Knock 'Em Out" because I think it would be funny if the phone said "Go away, leave me alone, are you stupid?" I have a weird sense of humour, what can I say.
I like my ridiculously synthesized, wordless versions.
Me too! I am sorry I missed your poll. I am using this post as an excuse to tell you how much I love my Legend of Zelda overworld theme ringtone. I also wouldn't have been much help with the poll since I've only ever heard of one of those songs before.
...there are too many "of"s in my sentence. Bah humbug.
