11:44 pm - Where We're Going, You Won't Need Any Pants!
AMPTP PROMISES TO COME BACK TO TABLE!

Oh, well, since I'm here: "Time Crash," the Doctor Who Children in Need Special. It's completely adorable and amusing.

Avatar

Quick thoughts on "The Puppetmaster": Holy shit, that was creepy. Bloodbending!! People in the TWoP thread had been talking about it for a year, and it was always qualified with "But the show would never go there." BUT IT DID. And I love that Hama forced Katara into bloodbending so that even though she lost, she won.

And now for "Nightmares and Daydreams," which amusingly starts off with...SHEEP. Koala-sheep. The episode as a whole was decent with some hilarity, but it felt like filler, which Avatar doesn't normally do.

But, oh my God, Aang's nightmares! Okay, in the first one, he was clearly Goku (Dragonball Z). The second one looked like Naruto to me because of the headband, but it's not a perfect fit. I'm not sure who it is. Suggestions have included Vash from Trigun, Cloud from Final Fantasy, and someone from Bleach. (I loved that the math test was on an abacus.) The third (well, fourth, but third in this series of homages) one has been identified as Chow Yun-Fat's character in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and it's a traditional enough style that I'll buy that. But the actual third nightmare was awesome, with all the creepy flickering flashes and Toph with NO EYES and Momo shushing and the world exploding...that's the stuff.

And then, Aang's daydreams! "You're my forever girl!" Ahahahaha. And then. And then.

MOMO TALKING.

APPA TALKING.

APPA VS. MOMO IN AN EPIC SAMURAI SHOWDOWN.

WITH CHEERING SQUADS OF KOALA-SHEEP.

RANDOM APPEARANCE BY GURU PATHIK.

The whole pointless episode was worth it just for that.

Elsewhere, Zuko finally looks up "self-awareness" in the dictionary.

Friday Night Lights

Matt's getting some HOT LATIN LOVIN'. Julie's going to be getting some HOT FACULTY ADVISOR LOVIN'. Smash could be getting some HOT WHITE GIRL LOVIN'. Billy's getting some HOT MILF LOVIN'. Riggins will be getting some HOT FERRET LOVIN'. Tyra should be getting some HOT POLTER-COW LOVIN'.

Also, how did they get to me to actually like Buddy Garrity?

I found the end of the pupetmaster disturbing. The gang just left the woman with the villagers, what's to say that she doesn't just escape and start killing fire nation people again?

Friday Night Lights is just too damn sexy. Also, Tyra is looking particularly hot these days, huh? I'm just loving that hair. And the football players strip tease? Thank you, FNL! I love you too.

But the Julie/Teacher thing creeps. me. out. I've always been particularly sensitive to inappropriate student/teacher relationships in fiction. It just really really really disturbs me in a way that's not fun for me. I don't know if it's because my dad was a teacher and I couldn't see these things without thinking of my dad having those kinds of relationships with students, which is obviously a disturbing thought on several levels. But for whatever reason, I get completely skeeved out VERY easily by those types of relationships, and I'm really not looking forward to this. What I want to see is Tami *seriously* nipping this thing in the bud, and reaming the teacher for crossing the line long before anything *really* bad happens.

And am I crazy, or was the promo for the next episode particularly revealing? Do they usually show such super-huge plot points in the promo? I don't really pay attention, I guess. This particular one just seemed like...way to give away the ending.

I'm so glad FNL has so many episodes remaining.

Jesus Christ, her boobs were practically popping out of her top.

It's a pretty sexy cut.

Yeah, honestly, I'd like that too. Because, come on now, Julie!!

Well, as soon as the promo guy started blathering on philosophically, I figured that's what it had to be, so I wasn't surprised they went ahead and showed the scene. It's probably closer to the beginning.

Also, was it just a weirdly cut shirt, or is one breast, like, a full cup size larger than the other? Because girl looked lopsided.

I know, right? Even given the unevenness of this season, I so appreciate that the characters are never caricatures. I guess we can add that to the my list of Reasons I Would Like To Marry FNL. (And, hee, my coworker says I can do that now! Get married, I mean. Because I can make good baked corn and also cookies. Unfortunately that's about all I can make. Anyway I'm getting sidetracked.)

I am trying to proselytize Kelly but she is resisting. I even made a deal that if she would watch FNL I would join her boyfriend's D&D game (I KNOW!!!) but then I was disinvited from the game. Dissed by D&D boys - that's a low moment, isn't it? And I was looking forward to naming my character "Carlos the Dwarf".

(No offense to any D&D fans, of course. I mock because I care.)

ANYWAY now that I'm getting totally off topic, my point is: got any suggestions for how I can convince Kelly to watch? Should I just hogtie her and tape her eyelids open?

(Oh and I guess while I'm blathering, re: your comment a post or two ago re: The Shield - DUDE, GO WATCH THAT SHOW. Seriously. Every season - hell, every single episode - they set the bar higher; and they consisently clear it. Man I could write treatises on its glory. Go watch now.)

But isn't The Shield, like, totally depraved and shit?

As for Kelly, I vote hogtie.

Well, it's certainly not a happy show; but it's depraved in a way similar to Oz, maybe. More anti-heroes than heroes, definitely. (And, also, the anti-villain. I wish I could take credit for that turn of phrase.) Interestingly, when I started watching the first season, I got this attitude from the pilot like "We're badass, oh yeah, look at us use the F word," and it was a little off-putting. Not the use of fucking profanity, I mean - just the vaguely fratty "we're so transgressive" air. But that may in large part have been me projecting; I think I'd just finished watching, like, Felicity or something, so it was a bit of an adjustment. I was impressed enough with s1 to go buy s2 and s3 and fell absolutely in love with it. And I have this theory - though I hate being all contructivist with gender and naming certain qualities "feminine" and others "masculine" - that when they hired a couple of women writers in season 2, the show really took off. There's an increasing complexity in the characters, more of a focus on their emotions, and more risks with some of the plotlines as well. Of course, that can also be ascribed to writers of any gender getting more comfortable with the characters and the show's world. So the gender thing is most likely bullshit. BUT ANYWAY the show is one of a very, very few to show consistent improvement in quality - it starts great and gets unbelieeeeeeevably amazing.

Also, across-the-board amazing actors, some of the best writing broadcast lately... I will admit to carrying quite the torch for Walton Goggins, but that's not really a selling point for you (or anyone else, I think!)...

AND! Kristen Bell guest starred in season 2!

(Wait, oh my God, after writing all this I just though, "Maybe he's being facetious." Oh well, I'm not going to change it. SARCASM is lost on me today!)

It was all about sex (or the implications of it) this week.

However--they get you to like Buddy because he's so devoted to football that he takes on a seriously messed up kid.

No, Fire Lord Sozin, you're not wearing any pants.

Um, it was a rough week, and Avatar made me laugh out loud numerous times, which normally only happens with the Soup which. . .I love you Joel, but the Writer's strike is not doing you any favors. I KNOW THAT'S NOT A SENTENCE,SUNIL. I have a really nasty cold, and I have lost my never-firm grasp of English. So, what with the terrible cold, the funny filler ep of Avatar that thankfully addressed our questions about the fact that Aang has been wandering around in a delusional cloud and has no idea how close the invasion is, was incredibly welcome, and I loved it.

I am going to go take some Sudafed.
