12:31 am - Darkly Dreaming
I have been rewatching Dexter on DVD, and it is so, so good. It's just...enchanting, seeing the world from the perspective of this quizzical monster ostracized from society yet trying desperately to fit in, merely so that no one catches on to the fact that he doesn't belong.

I love so much about this show. I love that the city of Miami is so vibrant and alive. I love that the characters are all fully realized with their own inner lives that we can see better than Dexter. I love Angel Batista. I love that each individual episode is perfectly crafted yet still has its place in the perfectly crafted overall arc. I love that watching the puzzle pieces fall into place is still entertaining even though I know what the picture is. I love that the many things Dexter does to pass as normal are things we ourselves do to pass as normal, posing the question of what society-defined "normal" truly means, whether it's necessary, and how good or bad it is that we all have a little bit of Dexter in us.

I thought that was a pretty new show. I remember hearing an ad for it on a podcast I listen to ... a month or two ago. Then going to ad it to Netflix, but it had only just started. Or something.

It aired late last year. The second season will be out soon, though.

Happy Birthday? I wasn't sure if the MI board calendar was correct.

Dexter is awesome, I really love that show. So extremely well done. Have you read the TWOP interview with Julie Benz?

I have Dexter on top of my TV, waiting for a moment to watch. I'm very excited since I like Michael C. Hall and have heard such great things about this show.

Mmmhmm. He keeps going on about he doesn't understand blah blah blah, and I kind of want to smack him sometimes because he totally feels some of the proper emotions.

Oh, dammit. I was sort of interested in Dexter before it aired, but never got around to watching it. I've read a few things here and there, but nothing that really made me feel I should give it a whirl. I've been okay with that.

Until today. You...!

Happy birthday, hope it's awesome!

Oh, on this second go-around, I'm actually sort of annoyed at his constant talk about not having feelings and such because it's such a load of crap. He does care about Deb and Rita and kids. It's blindingly obvious.

I love it so much too. I've been re-watching from the beginning too, to get ready for the official 2nd season premiere and it's been just a joy to watch. So dark, funny, moving, complex, just amazing TV! It's definitely my favorite, still on the air TV show.

And HAPPY Birthday! Here's something tasty for ya-

Totally agree with you man! I also loved the mixture of English and Spanish in dialog. And for once it made Miami look like a pretty cool place. It all helped to make the whole show seem more real. Which made everything happening in the show seem more real and therefore more fucked up!

And we did see Sweeney Todd last Saturday in The City and it was incredible. It helped that we knew the show already, since it was so minimalist, but it was just amazing all the work everyone did and it was soooo good!

Oh, fuck, I totally meant to mention that. I love that too.

Glad you enjoyed Sweeney!
