10:03 pm - I've Made a Huge Tiny Mistake
There is a moment during "Chicago," by Sufjan Stevens, that I tear up whenever I sing along.

if i was crying
in the van, with my friend
it was for freedom
from myself, and from the land
i made a lot of mistakes
i made a lot of mistakes
i made a lot of mistakes
i made a lot of mistakes

Because before in the song he had made a lot of mistakes in his mind, in his mind, but now, here, finally, the music mostly drops out and he just repeats the line sincerely without any sort of qualifiers, and it hits me because I, too, have made a lot of mistakes. I've made a lot of fucking mistakes. And there's something utterly beautiful about the idea that the simple acknowledgement of that fact can set you free. That in order to leave the past behind, you have to let it know you remember it. There's something gorgeous in the idea that you can have a transcendental experience just by going on a road trip, by physically leaving, by moving, seeing something new. All things go, all things go.

You know, this song is beautiful too. I give it to you as a bonus.

tenacious delight
the salt on my hands
and we never make
unruly demands
i want my wishes back

I love this song too, not least because it's named after my beloved city.

Wow, you have an icon for everything. And thanks for the music. They're really lovely songs and I hadn't heard of them before.

Sufjan Stevens and Rose Polenzani are both awesome. Highly recommended.

Yay, Rose Polenzani!

Oh, "The Same Height." The best love song in the history of both love and songs, ever.

(Well, "Daisy and Prudence" by Erin McKeown is neck-and-neck, I think.)

The recording of that is so bad I can never make out the lyrics.

"The Same Height," that is. Never heard the other one.

OK, so my computer hates me and won't let me sign up for yousendit (long story involving my purchasing a plague-ridden computer from a friend at work, and I should really just get a new laptop because this one is, as stated above, diseased) so I can't send you either one... But my favorite part of "The Same Height" is the chorus: "I want hold you, I want to hold you I want to touch you, I want to touch you I wanna see you." (And then later it's inverted, going from "see" to "hold".) I love the repetition. Also the line, "Who are you when I'm not with you?"

"Daisy and Prudence" has, in addition to great (if a bit obscure) lyrics, the loveliest spare guitar, just single notes and a few chords scattered behind the vocals. (And the greatest line ever: "This is a moment we'll mark time by." Aw.)

Man, I'm secretly such a romantic. Don't tell anyone. I have a reputation to maintain.

Oh shit, you really got me here.

This is me spreading the music love. I ripped this off of Ausiello. Inara George & Rod Jones with Ruins.

There's a song I got from ND: "Mary" by Oingo Boingo, that that somehow reminds me of, if for no other reason then that, under the right conditions, I bet either could make me tear up (which is not something I do with much regularity)

I guess they're both about "going", which certainly pings, and the changing it brings about (albeit in different ways).

Thank you kindly.

I really like Sufjan Stevens and "Chicago" is one of my favorite songs. I loved the way he just accepted his mistakes since the first time I heard it. He doesn't harp on his past mistakes and I like that.

That Sufjan song made me cry when he did it in person. They were wearing silly cheerleader costumes, & I'm the girl in the audience all bleary-eyed. No regrets!

I adore that part of "Chicago."

Sufjan Stevens helped me make a new friend a few weeks ago.

It's really not that exciting. Come On Feel the Illinoise! was playing at Borders while I was there for a writers' group meeting, and one of the other girls was a fan, and we talked about it a little bit.

I like how Ben's mispronunciation of Sufjan's name (which I did not know was a mispronunciation at the time) is preserved in my PhonePost.

Also, to be pedantic, the album is just Illinois, though the CD is misleading.

I'm driving to Chicago today. I definitely plan on listening to "Chicago". It's so good. And, since it's a song about road trips from western Michigan into Chicago, ridiculously appropriate.

How do you know the origin point is western Michigan? I mean, it makes sense that he can drive to both Chicago and New York, but it never says anything, does it?

You should also listen to "Welcome to Chicago, Motherfucker," by Kill Hannah.

He went to college in Holland, MI, and in interviews he's said that his college road trips to Chicago helped make Illinois the next up in his 50 states project, so I'm extrapolating from that.

And yes, I should.

Great songs! Weird, unrelated coincidences--I'm from Michigan, and my most recent LJ post was about sharing two Neko Case songs for downloading: http://fotada.livejournal.com/15378.html

I listen to her music all the time now! It's such a change for me, because usually I avoid anything that sounds anything like country music. But her beautiful voice is the exception.

Hey... I've got a question for you.

What do you think of this idea?

I'm trying to decide how to approach it, but it could potentially be a vehicle for getting new VM viewers...

I think it's fab! We've been trying to coordinate fan-swaps with Everwood and Arrested Development and such, so that would be a useful comm indeed.

I would politely ask the mods first. They'll most likely let you post, but that way you'll be sure you're not stepping on toes.

I'm not a mod, but I'm giving you permission by proxy to pimp it in cloud_watchers. Just gear your post toward the mission, obviously.

Put Sufjan Stevens on,
we'll play your favourite song.
Chicago bursts to life

and i thought that they meant the city, but now I know they mean this song. Thank you, Sunil! Bringing information to the masses.
