|09:20 am - Rob's Declassified Network Survival Guide|
Okay, now that The CW has officially announced that they are picking up Veronica Mars (bonus: Dawn Ostroff totally fucking mentioned the plane!), I can let you guys in on some intel from mid-April that had been labelled TOP SECRET by Rob Thomas.
Contrary to popular insider belief, in mid-April, Rob did not know that they were being picked up. He was told they were heavily favored, surely, but nothing was set in stone. Neither the network nor the studio had any claim on him for the coming fall.
Which is why NBC was able to offer him the showrunning gig for Friday Night Lights. And they wanted him exclusively.
Friday Night Lights is a drama about Texas high school football that shoots in Rob's hometown of Austin. You can imagine, then, that the offer was "pretty goddamn tempting." Throw in the fact that because he'd be playing with the big dogs, he'd have a huge budget and be promoted like crazy because of NBC's getting back in the NFL business, and it's a tough decision. Especially because the pilot he saw was "AWESOME." He was making himself sad wishing he could do both, but he wasn't going to put VM in jeopardy.
He passed on the offer a couple days after he told me about it; I don't know how long he'd been considering it. I thought it was awesome that he was even asked.
But that is what could have been. And that is Rob's devotion to Veronica Mars.

Didn't think it was possible....I love him more.

I'd say I love him but you know that already.

Oh wow. He's so awesome.
Wow, that's HUGE. And it only proves to me that when Veronica finally ends, there's still interest in RT quality produce for me to consume.
I think he's going to regret not doing that.
Well, let's hope FNL gets cancelled first, so he doesn't. Heh.

I would regret that. FNL is something that could be really cool.
I'm kind of hoping that it doesn't; a good HS football story would be fun to watch.
I agree. Not a good career move. FNL is going to ROCK! I love VM, but I don't see it being around for the long haul.
FNL!!! Oh, that would have been so much better if RT had run it, but as it is, I'm still pretty excited for it.
But, aww. ROB LOVES VERONICA!!! We all knew it, that big softy.
YOU'RE flattered on HIS behalf?
This, my friend, is why you have haters.
Well, good for them. I would be flattered on your behalf if something cool happened to you.
Maybe my wording is incorrect. All I mean is that I think it's cool, and I'm happy for him. I'll fix it because whatever (marriage).
Yeah, I figured that was what you meant, but the wording comes off as very pompous to me. Perhaps I'm just an accomplishment hog (as I don't think I would like others being flattered on my behalf, either).
Yeah, that was just me using words that sounded good without really knowing what they meant. That's not what I meant at all.
I will essay not to be flattered on your behalf in the future. All your flattery are belong to you.
Aw, Cowy. I wish I knew how to quit you.
Wait, shit, you already know how to quit me? Fuck.
So you'd better toe the line, mister.
What if I tow it instead? That way you'll never even be able to grab hold of it!
As a huge fan of the show, I am flattered on its behalf any time anyone says anything nice about it. RT runs "the little show that could" and we feel good for him when he gets recognition. Cause we love him and his show.
I'm flattered for my Pittsburgh Steelers whenever I hear SuperBowl champs. Doesn't make me egotistical or anything, I don't think.
Great posts like this are also why you have so many friends. Don't fret it.
Eh. Being misinterpreted is, like, a hobby of mine. I changed it to better reflect what I meant. I basically pulled that wording out of the fact that I told him he should be flattered.
WOW. Well, I guess this would make it official. ROB LOVES VERONICA!!! Not like there was ever any question in my mind, but that is pretty huge there. That's DEVOTION right there. Aww, I love our show's showrunner...
I had heard a rumor that he had gotten the offer, but I thought it couldn't be true. Wow. I guess they went to Katims after he turned it down. I know the Pilot had really good buzz and everyone was saying it turned out better than expected.
That must have been hard for him to turn down because, geez, a show about high school football in Texas? Could that BE anymore up his alley? But I'm glad he's still devoted to Veronica.

I KNOW! And filming in Austin, of all places. I would have been going crazy. I'm sure he really, really wanted to jump at that opportunity. Like kalbear
said above, he may regret it if VM doesn't take off, but I hope that isn't the case. More for my sake than for his. Heh.
Well, if VM ends and FNL succeeds, it may be around for a while and showrunners come and go . . .
I'm a fan of Jason Katims (MSCL, Roswell) and hope he does a good job, though. He knows high school stories also, but he's done mainly touchy-feely stuff before, not anything sports-related, afaik.
I'm sorry, I mean, I love Ros
crackwell as much as the next girl. But I can just imagine what Katims would do to a High School Football drama. Do you think it will have aliens?
Katims was story editor on MSCL long before Roswell and iirc, he was the showrunner on Relativity, neither of which involved aliens. I think that he was perhaps in over his head with the sci-fi parts of Roswell, which is why Ron Moore was brought in.
I have no idea how he'll do with FNL, but I loved Relativity and will be checking out FNL.
No, to be perfectly honest, as cracky as Roswell was, I loved it. I have faith. I think Katims could pull it off great, but it would have a very different flavour from an RT show.

Oh wow. But I'm so happy that he's sticking with VM instead.

And I knew that you knew something! Ha!
Thank you for sharing this. I have so much respect for this man.
Wow. God, I wish somehow he'd been able to take it. That sounds like an awesome job. Is okay to be disappointed for him and happy for us?
Good. I feel better now. Though, I would have probably watched that show if he had taken the job (despite having no interest at all in the subject matter). It's all a part of my "keep Rob Thomas Employed" scheme.
I'm with Kalbear on the regretting part.
Aw, Rob Thomas has integrity. That makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. Thanks for sharing the news with us.

Yay Rob, this is exactly why I love him. As a mega huge sports fan myself I can only imagine how tempting it was to work on a football show in Austin, and work with great people like Peter Berg and Kyle Chandler. Like I could totally never have begrudged him trying to juggle both committments, but he knows that Veronica needs him and didn't abandon her. Aww.
Fanttastic. There are not words to describe how quickly and completely this is becoming my all-time favorite fandom. Not only is the show itself awesome, but the fandom - and now RT - has consistently been blowing me away.
Dude, I'm so selfishly relieved and grateful he passed on that. Imagining VM being taken over by some unknown person is too freaky, especially when the show was and continues to be on the bubble.
Thanks for sharing that with us. It really makes me appreciate his commitment to this show even more.
My guess is that Diane would have taken over.
Wow. I love how dedicated he is to this show. Yay for him not being a JJ Abhrams!
Hurray! More good VMars for me to watch (I'm in the middle of season 2 and trying to stay away from spoilers, although someone just spoiled me for two things within ten minutes so I'm grumpy. The point is, I'm not as invested as with s1, but it's still reallly good TV, and I love Veronica, and I miss Wallace.)
You realize that I would never have forgiven RT for ditching VM for FNL if he had done that. It would've been such an easy way out. I have enormous respect for him that he would choose to fight for and nurture this struggling albeit brilliant series than buy into cockshock male sports soap cheese.
I was thinking about this today in my langue class when we were going over a ... completely comparable article about the significance and changes of Sundays in France. Point being, that's way cool. I needed an RT boost, hehe. I'm really really glad to get that reassurance about how much the show means to him.
craziness. absolute. could you imagine?!
i know that guy that wrote the movie for friday night lights, and he's not very happy they are making the show. i'm glad i didn't have a clash of fandomness.
Everybody better fucking watch VM because I don't want Rob regretting this. I'm sure FNL would still hire him on as showrunner if it goes on longer than VM does.
