11:38 pm - How About the Bureau of Magic and Spell Casting?
If you have Comcast, you are paying too much! Well, we all know that is generally a given, but Comcast appears to be in a particularly giving mood these days: I initiated a LiveChat to state that I was considering switching to AT&T or Astound and ask whether they had any special offers for existing customers, and "Richard" gave me a sweet deal that practically halves my cable/Internet bill for the next six months. I didn't have to push or anything! I mean, I pushed in case it helped, but it seemed like Comcast just had these awesome offers just lying around and THEY DON'T TELL YOU ABOUT THEM. truejavachik got her bill down by sixty percent plus added HBO and Showtime.

I just saved myself $435 by being mildly assertive. FOLLOW MY EXAMPLE.

My next move is possibly asking my landlord for an I've Been a Good Tenant for Three Years discount, since I just realized that he's not raising my rent this year. He always raises it the maximum amount, which is the increase in the CPI, which has been 3.3% the last three years...but this year, it's 0.7%! That's not even worth bothering with the paperwork, which he has not presented to me, and he's presented it much earlier the last two years since he has to give thirty days notice.

Unrelatedly, I watched the Psych pilot tonight, and, wow, it's so weird! Everything looks different, and it's not as snappy and polished as it's become over the years. There's some sort of Not!Jules who's slightly pretty and blonde but dull. And now I understand how the whole thing came together, although I still don't quite grasp why Shawn has to pretend to be a psychic as opposed to someone who's just really observant and exactly how much the police department buys into his schtick.

Relatedly, tonight's episode had its moments, but neither this week's nor last week's has been as funny as the premiere. Which Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly gave a C! A C! He doesn't appear to like or get the show at all. Lighten the fuck up, Ken!

Also, is it just me, or is Vick surprisingly pretty this season?

In other news, the Comic-Con posts have been written. Prepare yourselves for five days of epic posts next week.

I can't believe I'm reading about good customer service experiences with Comcast.

No, really. Before this every single story I heard had them ranging from total incompetence to pure evil.

That's because that's the only time people bother to post about Comcast. I've had good experiences—and stupid experiences—with them. Their technical staff is nigh incompetent; nearly every single problem I've had I've had to resolve myself. The first time I pulled the "I want to switch, what will you offer me?" gambit, I was told that I was not under a contract, so I could do what I wished, bye. But sometimes they have fixed my problem or given me a good deal! They tend to be nice and polite, at least.

I've had friends with resentful repairmen, repairmen who never showed, repairmen who broke things instead, etc. Oh, and one friend who used to work for them...that's an interesting perspective. I've seriously never heard one good thing about them. Maybe it's a PA thing. Yay for cheaper contracts, in any case. :)

Bad weather and construction tend to cause problems with our cable/internet/phone service at least once every two months. It seems like whenever we have an outage (at least when it involves the phone service) and complain, we get a nice deal for the next six months. So, Comcast rips us off but we get nice deals that makes it so we don't really know it.

Plus, even though it hasn't always been Comcast, we've been with the same cable company since the 80s, which also helps with getting deals when they want to keep us.

Comcast is weird.

IIRC, the girl who isn't Jules in the Psych pilot is Anne Dudek, who is In Everything. She is also Alby's wife Lura on Big Love, Betty's bff Francine on Mad Men, Amber something on House, and Ted's krav maga-practicing ex Stephanie on HIMYM. So basically she's the best.

also, wtf comcastic?!?!

Yeah, she did look sort of familiar, so I looked her up and she has been in Everything indeed!

I am so confused about the Comcasticness! I tried this months ago and was totally shot down! And now they are all, "Thank you for being such a loyal Comcast customer, Sunil. You deserve a discount." And I am all, "I agree!"

We had a mildly OK Comcast experience yesterday. The stupid road construction workers cut the line for cable and internet and when we called to report it as a neighborhood outage they actually came to fix it within the first hour of the 4 hour window they promised. They also started calling all customers in the area to inform them of the outage (which, um, thanks for telling us something we already knew). I will suggest to my Dad that he call to see if we can get a deal since we pay all our bills on time and they have had major issues with our connections and the new converter boxes.

A friend just did the same thing with her cable here (BrightHouse) so I suspect it's actually true of most companies. They aren't gonna advertise it because why not bilk those customers who won't call but, yeah, they give you the deals if you just ASK about them. I'm calling my company and inquiring too but after Weeds ends and I can ditch HBO and Sho.

Vick is always pretty!

I haven't really found her that pretty before! Maybe it's her hair? Does she have new hair?

That is indeed Cutthroat Bitch in the Psych pilot! I found her presence pretty surprising the first time I powered through the series. While I really dig Anne Dudek in a lot of her other roles, I am glad they retooled that aspect of the show. The dynamic between Jules and Lassiter is so great for comedy and character development drama-type stuff.

I really liked tonight's episode, but then, as you know, Lassiter is my favorite. Also, we were watching in HD, and there were some *gorgeous* shots in there, whether it was the sepia-toned shots of Old Sonora with the nifty windmill in the background or the extreme closeups of shifty eyes during the standoff.

It's definitely better for comedy, but they had this whole Secret Relationship plot set up that they apparently had to drop.

as you know, Lassiter is my favorite.
As I...oh? It's you! Hey. I enjoyed Lassiter's role in the episode, too.

We used to have Adelphia cable and internet, and we'd complain about the cost and get a deal lasting anywhere from six to 18 months. Then the price would go back to normal, we'd call and complain, and we'd get another deal.

Then Time Warner took over. They didn't care that we weren't happy with the cost. They didn't care that we were going to switch to a satellite dish. They didn't seem to care about anything.

So now we have Dish Network and DSL.

Yeah, in addition to all the other issues we had with comcast, it drove Jeremy and I nuts that every 4, 6, or 9 months we had to remember that our deal was ending and find a new one. There was always a new one but no one thinks to look for it until the bill with the gigantic "normal" amount hits. Every time I called to try and downgrade my service they would offer me ridiculous deals, and it would be like... this just makes it obvious how stupid the other price was.

I know! I can't believe how many hundreds of dollars I must have wasted by not asking for deals before. HUNDREDS. MAYBE THOUSANDS. FUCKING CHRIST, COMCAST.

Comcast is loosing customers left and right, they're doing a lot to hang on to people. In our area, they put in citywide wi-fi and comcast membership dropped radically. They offered as many sweet deals as they could to keep us, but I still paid for a year of citywide internet for the same amount as two months of Comcast.

Just beware of the cancellation. The niceness STOPS when you finally disengage. They will report you to credit for outstanding balances whether or not you've paid them. I owed them nothing, and they still reported me as delinquent.

I have had no end of problems with comcast, including, but not limited to, being told I was getting an intro rate and then not getting it (because of some bullshit loophole, my basic cable is included in my rent so apparently that means I have to pay full price for internet), getting absolutely no help, being over-billed, all sorts of things. I still don't get the On Demand service that comes with my cable package, but I'm so sick of going through their automated phone menu to argue with someone who doesn't know what the hell they're talking about that I just try to forget that I don't have it and everyone else does and that I'm paying almost $50 a month for internet that doesn't work sometimes.

I have been told many stories about getting free HBO and things of that nature, maybe I should try this "being assertive" thing. And what? I can live-chat with people on the site instead of suffering through their phone menu?!

With what's happened to the economy, a lot of companies are suddenly realizing that they're not going to be able to get away with raising prices anymore. Now that the housing bubble's burst, if my landlord asks me to sign another lease I'm going to be asking for a cut in the rent.

...I still don't quite grasp why Shawn has to pretend to be a psychic...
As near as I can tell, just because it amuses him. That and the premise and humor of the show is built around it.

...exactly how much the police department buys into his schtick.
I always had this feeling that Chief Vick knows perfectly well that Shawn isn't psychic, but keeps him around because he is useful.

But then, I always find it a stretch how many people are perfectly willing to believe that Shawn is psychic. I mean, how many people do you know who believe in psychics? And have never read Sherlock Holmes?

Which Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly gave a C! A C! He doesn't appear to like or get the show at all.
I thought it was a well-known fact that Entertainment Weekly knows nothing about entertainment. ;-)
